The Role/Material of Japanese Sword Tsuba
The tsuba (handguard) plays a crucial role in Japanese swords. Positioned between the handle and the blade, it’s a circular component primarily made of iron. It prevents the hand from sliding onto the blade when using the sword, especially during forceful clashes or thrusting techniques.
Besides its practical use, tsuba also hold artistic value. With advancements in casting techniques, the decorative aspects of tsuba have been enhanced, leading to the emergence of specialized craftsmen known as ‘tsuba-shi’. Their sizes and shapes vary, often adorned with elaborate decorations like birds, beasts, and flowers, making them one of the highlights of Japanese sword appreciation. Tsuba have evolved from mere practical items to works of art.
